The first race took place on 28 May 1907 on a 10-lap circuit of about 25.5 kilometres. The winner of this first edition in the single-cylinder category was Charlie Collier, who piloted a Matchless and completed the course in 4 hours, minutes and 8 seconds, achieving an average speed of 61.5 km/h.
The winner in the two-cylinder category was Rem Fowler, who driving a Norton with a Peugeot engine completed the circuit in 4 hours, 21 minutes and 52 seconds, for an average speed of 58.3 km/h.
The trophy awarded to the winner of that first edition was donated by the Marquis of Mouzilly, and represents the god Hermes. The trophy is currently awarded to the winner of the senior category.
Today it is considered one of the fastest races in motorcycling, with more than 250 deaths throughout its history and with average speeds exceeding 200 km/h and peak speeds of 332 km/h.
